NBA President Says He Won’t Resign Because Of Charges

The President of the Nigerian Bar Association and Senior Advocate of Nigeria, Mr. Paul Usoro, has said he will not resign based on the N1.4bn fraud charges preferred against him by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission.

Addressing journalists last Saturday, Usoro said that only the National Executive Committee of the NBA could decide whether to remove him from office or not, adding that the body had, during a meeting of its national executive committee held on December 6, adopted his explanation on the allegations.

The EFCC had alleged in the 10 counts filed before the Federal High Court in Lagos on November 29, 2018 that Usoro converted and laundered the cumulative sum of about N1.4bn in connivance with Governor Udom Emmanuel of Akwa-Ibom State.

But the NBA president maintained his innocence concerning the charges on Saturday insisting that the funds he received from Udom and the Akwa Ibom State Government were professional fees.

He said, “I will be in court on Monday, I have already made that quite clear. Let me emphasise this: I haven’t been served.  I expect that I will be served.

“But I am completely innocent. I presented the facts, as I know them, in the address that was adopted by the NEC. As I have said, you can read the address and you can pick up the facts from there.”

Asked if he would resign after his arraignment, he said, “I will not. I consider that it is the national executive committee of the NBA that has the power to decide whether I should remain or not. This matter was presented to the committee. We had a very good and successful meeting and nobody raised the issue in regard to whether I should leave or not.”

To back his position, he cited the instance of the Senate President Bukola Saraki, who remained in office until he was absolved of the assets declaration charges by the Supreme Court.

“What would have happened if the Senate President had resigned?” Usoro, who was one of the lead lawyers in Saraki’s legal team, queried.

He said the case against him was possibly “hyped” barely 48 hours to the NBA’s NEC meeting to instigate the body to remove him from office.

Usoro also said that, among other issues deliberated during its meeting, the committee regretted the worsening insecurity in country, which was said to have led to the murder of four members of the NBA in different parts of the country in the last three months.

In his address at the NEC meeting, Usoro said his investigation and planned prosecution by the EFCC, had among other implications for lawyers, the breach of client-lawyer privilege, with the anti-graft agency standing as auditor or regulator for legal fees and criminalisation of lawyers’ fees.

He also said the NEC called for an end to different forms of harassments visited by law enforcement officers on lawyers in the course of their duties, adding that the NBA was planning a visit to the Inspector-General of Police on the need to draw a protocol for the engagement of policemen with lawyers.

The Lagos Waste Management Authority (LAWMA) has embarked on a motorised advocacy campaign, to key areas of Eti-Osa Local Government, to sensitise residents on sustainable environment, as part of activities marking the Authority’s observance of World Cleanup Day.

Adopting the theme, “Make Room for Life”, the roadshow kicked off at Lekki Toll Gate, covering Ilasan, Jakande Bus-stop, Maiyegun Beach Road, Eleganza Bus-stop, Ajah, to Abraham Adesanya, to raise awareness about environmental cleanliness and resource management of waste in Lagos State.

Speaking on the significance of the campaign, LAWMA’s Managing Director/CEO, Dr. Muyiwa Gbadegesin, stated that the campaign was part of the agency’s larger effort to mobilise individuals, communities, and organisations to take immediate action towards a cleaner environment.

He said, “Our goal is to drive a change in behavior and attitudes towards proper waste management in Lagos. Through this motorised advocacy, we aim to engage residents of Eti-Osa and beyond, encouraging them to adopt better waste disposal habits and embrace programs such as our Adopt-a-Bin initiative and Recycling efforts.”

Gbadegesin said the campaign was also aimed at addressing pressing waste management issues in the area, especially illegal waste dumping and cart pushing, which had posed a significant environmental challenge.

The LAWMA boss noted that the occasion of World Cleanup Day served as a reminder of the need for Lagosians to adopt sustainable waste practice, like waste sorting, recycling, and the use of designated bins, adding that the practices were key to reducing the amount of waste on the streets and landfills.

The roadshow, which involved the usage of English and the three major Nigerian languages: Yoruba, Hausa, and Igbo, focused on encouraging residents to adopt responsible waste disposal practices and featured advocacy on the importance of sorting, bagging, and containerising waste.

A significant part of the campaign was on LAWMA’s “Adopt-a-Bin” initiative, which highlighted the introduction of new geo-located smart bins, equipped with RFID panels, designed to prevent theft and enhance waste management efficiency for residents, aligning with Lagos State’s vision of becoming a smart city.

Head of LAWMA’s Advocacy Unit, Mr. Adewunmi Adetona, who addressed residents and business owners, at the event, advocated for the use of smart bins, to achieve the state’s goal of a clean and sustainable environment, adding that cleanliness in the city was essential for fostering economic growth and investment opportunities.

LAWMA’s Ambassador, Alhaji Sikiru Ademola Junaid, popularly known as Lemon, played a key role, engaging and educating the community through music, rendering “Keep Lagos clean and recycle waste” song, to drive home the importance of waste separation.

On the campaign train were heads of LAWMA’s various departments and units, including street sanitation sweepers, medical staff, neighbourhood watch, enforcement personnel, as well as officials of Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA), demonstrating a collective commitment to achieving a cleaner and smarter Lagos State.

In a bid to create a platform for critical stakeholders to share ideas, explore opportunities for collaboration and co-create pathways for the commercialisation of research outputs, the Nigerian Content Development and Monitoring Board (NCDMB) is partnering Triple Helix Nigeria (THN) to host the maiden edition of the SciBiz Annual Conference 2024.

Themed “Integrating Research Innovation and Policy: Triple Helix Pathway to a Digital Nigeria,” the event, slated for Abuja between 23rd and 25th October, brings together the academia, industry and government – known as the three arms of the Triple Helix – for the purpose of formulating strategies to bridge the gap between scientific discoveries and their practical applications in solving societal challenges.

The group notes that “The Triple Helix model…has been a proven mechanism for fostering innovation ecosystems in advanced economies,” but that it has been largely lacking in Nigeria because of limited interaction among the three aforesaid arms, with the result that the potential synergy has remained untapped.

The Conference, which is being sponsored by the Nigerian Content Development and Monitoring Board (NCDMB), is touted as a strategic response to “the urgent need to strengthen innovations that convert research findings into marketable products and services, generate employment, and stimulate economic growth.”

Key programme elements, as announced, include Plenary Sessions, featuring expert keynote speakers from Nigeria and abroad; Panel Discussions in which leaders from the academia, industry, and government, would explore how to overcome barriers to research commercialisation and innovation in Nigeria, and Innovation Pitching Competition, to be conducted in collaboration with OxFounders, featuring presentation of projects undertaken by startups and innovators to potential investors and partners.

Other key elements are Workshops and Breakout Sessions, involving discussion groups focusing on research funding, intellectual property management, and fostering entrepreneurial mindset in universities; Exhibition, a platform for innovators, startups, research institutions, and industries to showcase their products, services, and technologies to a diverse audience, and Diaspora Engagement, for which a dedicated subcommittee is in place “to facilitate collaborations with Nigerian professionals to leverage global expertise for local challenges.”

Target audience for the Conference are academics and researchers from Nigerian and international universities, representatives from industries, including startups and small and medium-scale enterprises (SMEs), government officials and policymakers in science, technology, and innovation sectors, investors and venture capitalists, international organisations and development partners, innovators, entrepreneurs, and students.
