A Senator-elect, Rt. Hon. Wasiu-Eshinlokun Sanni on Monday said the next Senate President must come from the South and should be a Christian, noting the ruling All Progressives Congress, APC would have to balance the choice of Muslim/Muslim ticket of the executive arm Government of the incoming administration.
Wasiu-Eshinlokun gave the advice during an interview with the correspondents covering the Lagos State House of Assembly in his office, Alausa, Ikeja.
Eshinlokun-Sanni who is an outgoing Deputy Speaker of the State House of Assembly and he is billed to represent Lagos Central in the 10th Assembly.
August24news.com gathered that he House correspondents were in his office to present an award of meritorious service to the outgoing Deputy Speaker who had played prominent role in ensuring stability in the State House of Assembly in the last eight years.
It would be recalled that the Vice President-elect, Senator Kashim Shettima had disclosed that the President-elect, Bola Tinubu, picked Godswill Akpabio as his preferred candidate for the position of senate president to avoid the “negative narrative of Islamization”.
Shettima spoke Friday during a meeting with some elected lawmakers including Tajudeen Abbas, whose ambition to be House Speaker has been endorsed by Tinubu and the ruling party, APC.
Shettima said Mr Tinubu wants to prevent a situation where the President, Vice President, Senate President and Speaker of the House of Representatives would all be Muslims.
The same faith ticket of Tinubu and Shettima already created a situation where the president and vice president are Muslims. There have, therefore, been calls by many Nigerians for the APC to ensure religious balance in its choice of presiding officers of the parliament.
Eshinlokun-Sanni therefore reiterated that, “For the 10th Assembly, I believe the party should play prominent role. There are so many factors that must be considered. He or she must crime from the South and must be a Christian. The noise about Muslim/Muslim ticket must be nipped in the bud.
“As we speak, there are three Senators that are qualified for the Senate President seat. Akpabio , Kalu and Izunazo. And we have to consider the aspitants based on the contributions of each region.
“The north central has a right to complain. But don’t forget that there are other positions that they can take. The government and the party will have to find some positions to give them. It is not a rocket science,” he noted.
