The Director-General of the National Population Commission, Dr. Abuh Mohammed, on Wednesday, 7th October 2026, held a high-level strategic meeting with Nigeria’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations, His Excellency Ambassador Jimoh Ibrahim, on the margins of the 81st Session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA81) in New York, United States.
Dr. Mohammed is in New York as part of Nigeria’s delegation to the General Assembly, where he is representing the NPC in the deliberations of the Second Committee (Economic and Financial Matters) and the Third Committee (Social, Humanitarian and Cultural Issues), two bodies whose mandates intersect directly with the Commission’s core responsibilities in demographic data generation, population policy, and sustainable development.

The meeting centred on deepening collaboration between the NPC and Nigeria’s Permanent Mission to the United Nations, with a view to securing the Mission’s support and advocacy in mobilising technical assistance, financial resources, and institutional partnerships to advance the fulfilment of the Commission’s mandate.
Responding, Ambassador Jimoh Ibrahim reaffirmed the Mission’s commitment to the Commission’s work and pledged to engage critical stakeholders on the urgent need for the National Council on Population Management meeting. He emphasised that the Council remains central to the effective coordination of national population policies and programmes across all tiers of government and among relevant stakeholders.
Also, in attendance was Dr. Kehinde Seun-Addie, Director of the Population Management Department at the NPC, who accompanied the Director-General to the engagement.
The meeting underscores the Commission’s unwavering commitment to strengthening international partnerships and multilateral cooperation as it pursues its constitutional mandate of delivering accurate, reliable, and timely demographic data, which is the bedrock of evidence-based planning and national development.
