WORLD TEACHERS’ DAY: LAGOS ASSEMBLY CELEBRATE EDUCATORS

Speaking at plenary, the Speaker, Rt. Hon. (Dr.) Mudashiru Ajayi Obasa, noted that teachers, especially those in Lagos, deserves to be celebrated for their efforts and determination to make the State attain the global education target of leaving no child behind.

He, however, noted that to keep up with the quality education, government should ensure that standard requirements for school establishments are met before approvals are granted, especially in relation to private schools.
Applauding the efforts of the Governor, Mr. Babajide Sanwo-Olu, for adequately recognising teachers; the Speaker also tasked him on the need for teachers to get their pensions promptly.
Hon. Okanlawon Sanni, prime mover of the motion, explained that the United Nations Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO) proclaimed 5th October, every year as World Teachers’ Day as a reminder to the world that education and teachers are important.
He also noted that the theme of Y2022 World Teachers Day: “The transformation of education begins with teachers is in respect of teachers” determination and diligent efforts to transform education from conventional to advanced form and to make it more rewarding.
Acknowledging the contributions made by teachers globally and particularly in Lagos State, Hon. Okanlawon appreciated the Lagos State Government and Nigerian Union of Teachers, Lagos Chapter, for shaping and uplifting the teaching profession and giving teachers a voice.
Supporting the motion, Hon. Richard Kasunmu, applauded the contributions of the Lagos Government and the State House of Assembly to education noting that there are laws passed by the House that strengthen the profession.
A Member who was a teacher for many years, Hon. AbdulSobur Olayiwola noted that every profession stems from the instructions and tutelage given by teachers.
He urged the government to do more to appreciate them.
In his submission, Hon. Kehinde Joseph, implored the Federal Government and the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) to resolve their crisis as it affects teachers, parents and students.
While commending the prime mover, Hon. Tobun Abiodun, suggested that free amenities be provided for teachers as well as special salaries to further motivate them and encourage other people to join the profession.
Other Members aired their views on the support for the teaching profession. Amongst them are; Hon. Oluyinka Ogundinmu who opinionated that government should ensure that the teaching sector retirement package and benefits are given priority.
Hon. (Engr.) David Setonji noted that teachers in other countries such as Finland earn more salaries than any government servant. He, therefore implore the State government to ensure that same is replicated in Lagos.
Meanwhile, Hon. Bisi Yusuff urged the Lagos State Government to ensure that students in classrooms are reduced for maximum results from teachers. He also advocated for a reduction in teachers’ workload inorder to perform optimally.
He argued for the reintroduction of Morals Studies, Christian and Islamic Religious Knowledge into the study curriculum.
Hon. Akinsanya Nureni pleaded with the publics to give back to teachers as this would boost morale in the profession.
Hon. Sanai Agunbiade advised parents to pay attention to their children in order to support teachers at school.
