OBASA, LAWMAKERS CELEBRATE INTERNATIONAL WOMEN’S DAY

To commemorate Y2022 International Women’s Day, Speaker, Rt. Hon. (Dr.) Mudashiru Ajayi Obasa and other Lawmakers of the Lagos State House of Assembly, during Plenary on Tuesday celebrated with all the women in the world and Lagos State in particular.

Speaker Obasa noted that “This day is an opportunity to address lacking issues, protect and improve on women standard of living by looking inward into sectors that are beneficiary to our women who are generally victims by ensuring that their safety needs amongst other things are looked into.”

Speaking under Matter of Urgent Public Importance, Hon. (Mrs.) Mojisolaoluwa Ali-Macaulay stated that the United Nations has set aside every 8th of March as the International Women’s Day to celebrate and recognize the contributions of women and girls around the world.

This year’s International Women’s Day themed “GENDER EQUALITY FOR SUBSTAINANCE TOMORROW” aimed at acknowledging the immense contributions of women and girls who are leading the charge on climate change adaptation, mitigation and response to build a more sustainable future for as well as ensuring economic and social development.

Hon. Ali-Macaulay added that contributions made by women and girls are effective and powerful while their participation and leadership role has sustained a developed economy around the world.

Lending his voice, Hon. Sanai Agunbiade, Majority Leader of the House, maintained that women have special pain threshold and more courageous than men in terms of distress.

He therefore advised that Intra-gender sensitization should be encouaged by supporting female aspirants who wish to take charge in the political sector.

Speaking to the commemoration, Hon. Rotimi Olowo expressed the need to encourage women by acknowledging their greatness in the private sector, taking cognizance of their responsibility and peculiarity towards gender equality.

Hon. Obafemi Saheed noted that although Nigerian women have contributed immensely to the emancipation of economic and cultural development at large; they need to brace up and participate more in politics by supporting each other much more than presently.

Other Honorable Members while adding their submissions spoke on the need to empower women to have a voice and be equal in decision-making which is essential for sustainable development.

In the same vein, Speaker Obasa had earlier at the Assembly gate, received a delegation of ‘purple women’ led by the First Lady of the State, Mrs. Ibijoke Claudiana Sanwo-Olu in ensuring that the parliament creates opportunities for a higher percentage of women in politics.

Mr. Speaker thereafter directed the Acting Clerk of the House, Barr. Olalekan Onafeko to forward an appreciation letter to the First Lady “Assuring her that Lagos State House of Assembly will continue to make Laws that will benefit the interest of women generally”.
