It was a night of glitz, glamour and celebration of Nigeria’s visionaries at the Eko Hotels Convention Centre, Lagos, and venue of the 2018 The Sun awards where 23 distinguished Nigerians were honoured in different categories of the annual event.

The ceremony began at exactly 7pm with musical performances. Soon after the national anthem was rendered, Managing Director/ Editor-in-Chief of The Sun Publishing Ltd, Mr Eric Osagie welcomed guests and the awardees who he described as visionaries in their chosen fields of endeavours,  to the 16th edition of the glamorous ceremony. He urged Nigerians to remain optimistic about Nigeria, saying the country has a bright future.

He congratulated the awardees on their honour, saying picking 23 out of over 180 million Nigerians was not an easy task. “16 years after, we seek to prove the point that Nigeria is a great country with great people. Nigeria is not finished. Today, we have 23 awardees in the country of 200 million, to pick 23 awardees is no mean task,” he added. Mr Osagie lauded his predecessors Mike Awoyinfa who started The Sun Awards, Tony Onyima and Femi Adesina for nurturing the awards to becoming the biggest media awards in Africa.

Eminent businessman and the former Governor of Abia State, Dr. Orji Uzor Kalu, who is also the Chairman of The Sun Publishing Ltd, said the destiny of Nigeria lies squarely in the hands of Nigerians.

He said he has no doubt that Nigeria would be greater and achieve her potential if all Nigerians contribute their own quota especially by doing the right things at the right time. He assured that by so doing, Nigeria would take her place among the comity of nations.

Represented by his daughter, Mrs. Neya Iyere, he tasked Nigerians to replicate the kind of passion, zeal and oneness they display while watching sports contests in which Nigeria is taking part.

Kalu, who is the Publisher of The Sun Newspapers, said the Nigerians that were recognised had done something remarkable and extraordinary to have been singled out for recognition. He said they had contributed immensely in their various domains – locally and internationally, to greatly impact lives.

“I am delighted to welcome you all to this event to recognise great Nigerians on their tremendous contributions to socio-economic and political development of the country. I congratulate all the winners because they have done something remarkable, which should not be ignored. The awardees should be proud of their accomplishments just as The Sun Publishing Limited that is recognising them.

“We should make sacrifices and show love and oneness that we exhibit when our national feature is in any contest.  It is the good things that we do as individuals that will translate to the Nigeria of our dream. We are the ones to make this happen,” he said.
Those honoured at the event include:  Mallam Nasir El-Rufai, Kaduna State governor, who received his diadem as Man of the Year; Governor Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi of Enugu State (Governor of the Year); Bayelsa State governor, Seriake Dickson (Most Outstanding Politician of the Year) and Governor Kashim Shettima of Borno State (Courage in Leadership).

In their reactions, the awardees expressed appreciation to The Sun for finding them worthy of recognition. Kaduna state governor, Nasir El-Rufai  said.

“I am greatly honoured to stand before you on behalf of the people and government of Kaduna State to accept the honour of The Sun Man of the Year award. I have attended this event in the past when some of my close friends were awarded the same honour. I attended when my friends Nuhu Ribadu, Chukwuma Soludo, Chibuike Amaechi and Oby Ezekwesili were awarded  and I was there to felicitate with them. I am very happy to join this illustrious list of very credible Nigerians and I want to thank The Sun Newspapers for the honour; I hope I will not let the paper and its reputation down.

“Nigeria needs leaders that will unite and not divide us; leaders that will bring progress and not retrogression. The Sun Newspaper is a veritable platform for the unity of Nigeria and that is why I am very proud to be associated with it.

“Governor Seriake Dickson has talked about reaching across the aisle and I want to say proudly that this set of governors across party lines have ensured that our country is peaceful and making steady progress. I want to thank everyone present for taking the time to come and honour me. I was supposed to attend a dinner with President Muhammadu Buhari and other All Progressives Congress (APC) governors but he relieved me of my duties and directed me to attend this event because he said that The Sun Newspaper is an important component of our media architecture. President Buhari sends his regards and congratulates all the recipients. “

The governor of Enugu State, Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi while appreciating the Governor of the Year award said that his state is in the hands of God and responsible for the success of his administration. “I could have won any election with the illustrious award; unfortunately I am not on the ballot. I dedicate this award to my family and to the people of Bayelsa for their support and faith in me.”

African’s richest woman, Mrs Folorunsho Alakija and Emperor Chris Baywood Ibe dedicated their humanitarian Award to Nigerian widows and wife respectively.

Alakija said it was a privilege and honour to be awarded and thanked God for the strength to help the less privileged.

Baywood classified the award as the ultimate award. “This award is ultimate and I dedicate it to my wife for her support. If she does not, I would have not been able to do more with Baywood Foundation,” he stated.

In his acceptance speech, Chief Osoba dedicated the award to all the reporters who are still active in reporting, saying that he still remains a reporter and would die a reporter. He thanked The Sun for the award.

In her response, Senator Ita-Giwa expressed gratitude to The Sun for giving her the award in her life time, saying that she preferred lifetime award to posthumous award.
She said her election into the Nigeria Senate has helped her to do a lot for her people, particularly the resettlement of Bakassi people. She also promised to continue to fight for the good cause of her people.

Professor Kunle Olowo presented the lifetime awards to the recipients on behalf of Chief Afe Babalola, who could not make the event.

The entertainment content of the event was well delivered by Nigerian music sensation Tiwa Savage who thrilled the audience at the biggest media event in the country. Savage, who returned from the United Kingdom within the week for The Sun Awards, entertained the audience with her band and dancers.

Also, the evergreen Veentage Band, among other top artistes, including popular comedian, Bovi also thrilled guests.

In a world where health is wealth, Kola Kuforiji, a Nigerian journalist who had worked for about two decades with Rhythm FM (Sliverbird Group) reporting business is facing an unthinkable challenge, and needs urgent help.

Kola, a 54-year-old husband and father of two, whose life was turned upside down when he was diagnosed with a drug-resistant, Parkinson’s disease with pronounced difficulty in walking and tremor has been very ill for more than two years and the severity and debilitating nature of his illness has depleted the finances of his family.

He was initially treated at Ikorodu General Hospital, Lagos, where a presumptive diagnosis of his medical condition was made.

He was over a year ago referred to LASUTH, but there has been little improvement in his health.

Medical treatment abroad now offers the best option for his recovery with a recommendation from Atasehir Medicana International Hospital – Atasehir / Istanbul, Turkey confirming that he will need a Deep Brain Stimulation surgery.

The expected total cost of the Deep Brain Stimulation surgery with traveling expenses is put at $35,000 (USD) about N57 million at recent exchange rate.

Meanwhile friends of Kola have initiated moves to seek financial support from concerned citizens to help bridge the gap and ensure that he receives the care he needs to overcome this challenge.

A bank account to receive fund for the urgent medical intervention has been opened for donation that will bring hope and healing to Kola and his family.

Despite his illness, Kola remains hopeful and determined to overcome.

The Nigeria Customs Service, Apapa Port Command has busted an attempt at smuggling illicit drugs worth a total of N1,183,915,500 (one billion, one hundred and eighty three million, nine hundred and fifteen thousand, five hundred naira into the country in 4 units of 40ft containers.

Breakdown of the seizures shows they were 236,783 bottles of cough syrup containing codeine and barkadin cough syrup packed in a total of 2,174 cartons from two terminals under the command. Three of the seizures were made in APM Terminals and one was made at Kachicares Bonded Terminal.

Giving further details on the seizures, Customs Area Controller of the Command, Comptroller Babatunde Olomu, described it as a fallout of the service zero tolerance for smuggling.

Comptroller Olomu said, “On 11th of October 2024, our officers during a joint examination of 1×40 container number MRKU0377493 found prohibited CSP cough syrup in 34,800 bottles. The offensive importation was also found to have expired. The smugglers packed them in 174 cartons with 200 bottles per carton.

“On the same day, during another examination in the same terminal, a 1×40 container TGBU8886020 was found to be laden with 39,700 bottles of DSP cough syrup packed in 100 bottles per carton.

Another 1x40ft container NO TCKU6800526 dropped at APMT Container Terminal, said to contain Essential goods was examined on 15 October 2024, and after examination it was found to contain a concealment of 19 cartons of CSJ cough syrup for throat and chesty with codeine 100ml packed in 200 bottles per carton

“At Kachicares Resources Terminal,1X40FT container NO SUDU8579006 said to contain kitchen wares was examined on October 15, 2024 and found to contain concealment of Barcadin cough syrup for throat and chesty cough in 100ml

“They were packed in 1,584 cartons. Another set of 83 loose bottles was also found in the container.

“Like I have always said, Apapa Command is committed to seamless trade facilitation powered by robust stakeholders engagement but will not compromise on our revenue collection, anti smuggling mandates as we facilitate trade.

” For the umpteenth time, I want to warn perpetrators of unlawful trade to steer clear from Apapa Port as our eagle eye officers relying on intelligence, technology and on the job experience are out to uncover all their smuggling antics” the controller said.

Codeine abuse has been found to cause nausea or vomiting, making addicts feel sleepy, unable to concentrate or think clearly, and behave irrationally, including exhibition of criminal tendencies.

The federal government banned the importation of codeine cough syrup in 2018 following its abuse and the adverse effects it caused on many youth who got addicted to it.

These banned substances have been found to spur criminal activities and deviant behaviors capable of setting society backward.

The Area Controller has directed further investigation into the seizures to unravel further details that could lead to the arrest of the suspect(s) involved.
